Mx-Suite Installation
The Mx-Suite is tested and qualified for use on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). We recommend a minimum of a dual core computer with 4GB of RAM. Installation instructions are as follows:
Note: For versions prior to 3.32.188, see instructions below.
Installation Checklist
| • | You may need to have administrator privileges on the computer to perform the installation. |
| • | You need to have .Net 3.5 SP1 already installed. Many windows applications use the .Net libraries from Microsoft. To see if it is already installed, check under Control Panel‑>Add or Remove Programs. Look for: Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP 1. You can find a download link at: |

What to Install
Two installers are available for download:
| • | MxSuite vMM.II.RR.BB.msi (where MM.II.RR.BB corresponds to the version of the release), which includes: |
| o | Mx-VDev - Test development and execution |
| o | Mx-TransIt - Test environment modeling, co-simulation, ... |
| o | Mx-Diff - Test results differencing tool |
| • | Mx-Serve.msi, which includes: |
| o | Mx-Serve - A Windows service that hosts a Token License Pool and serves tokens to the Mx-Suite components. |
| o | Mx-Serve Manager - An application that interfaces with the Mx-Serve service. It shows information about the status of Mx-Serve, how many users there are, how many tokens are in use, etc. It allows you to add and remove tokens. |
Always install Mx-Serve before Mx-Suite.
The table below shows typical installation scenarios, along with the list of the minimum installation required in each case. You can install all three programs whatever your usage scenario.
Installation Scenario |
Minimum Installation |
||||
You are already running Mx-Suite (fixed or floating licenses) and just want to install or upgrade to the latest version. |
|
||||
You want to set up a workstation to use the Mx-Suite with floating licenses over a network |
|
||||
You want to set up a workstation to use the Mx-Suite with fixed licenses |
|
||||
You want to set up a floating license Token Pool on a server computer for client machines to access |
|
||||
You want to set up a computer to monitor Token Pool usage and status |
|
Note that you can have several versions of the Mx-Suite installed at once. When you install a new version, earlier versions are not overwritten (by default) or uninstalled. To uninstall prior versions, use the Uninstall MxVDev command accessible from the Start menu.
| 1. | Use the installation wizards to install the necessary components. |
| 2. | If you have a new or changed license, see Mx‑Serve Manager License Update. |
Host Computer Selection
If you are using floating licenses, a computer is required to host the token pool. The Token Host computer has to run a Windows OS (2000, 2003, 2008, XP, Windows 7) and be generally accessible on your network. To ensure that you have licenses available when you need them, the choice of host computer is very important. Risk factors that can affect license availability include:
| • | Access to the machine is not restricted. Hardware changes are uncontrolled. There is no control over what else is installed on the system. |
| • | Power supply is not assured (no backup power supply), or the machine may be powered down inadvertently. |
| • | Antivirus software or other scanning programs are not configured to ignore the Mx‑VDev license files. You should configure Anti-Virus software to exclude files in the MicroMax\Mx-Serve folder. |
| • | Machine crashes periodically because it is used for development work, or it has unreliable software or hardware components (such as drivers, disk, or RAM) |
| • | Process priorities are adjusted and the CPU runs at very high utilization. (Note that Mx‑VDev adjusts priorities and can run at high CPU utilization.) |
We strongly recommend a machine under the control of the IT department be used.
For instructions on installing a token pool, see Floating Token Host Setup.
Installation Log Files
If there are any problems with installation, it may be necessary to create a log file. This can be done by running the installer from the command line as follows:
msiexec /lvoicewarmup log.txt /i "MxVDev v3.xx.xx (xxxx).msi"
Installation Instructions for Version 3.32.187 and before
Install the Mx-Suite by clicking on the installer file. The installer file name is of the form: MxSuite vMM.II.RR.BB.msi where MM.II.RR.BB corresponds to the precise version of the release.
You will see when you launch the Mx-Suite Installer, that there are three programs you can install.
| • | Mx-Serve - A Windows service that hosts a Token Pool and serves tokens to the Mx‑Suite components. |
| • | Mx-Serve Manager - An application that interfaces with the Mx-Serve service. It shows information about the status of Mx-Serve, how many users there are, how many tokens are in use, etc. It allows you to add and remove tokens. |
| • | Mx-Suite - The Mx-Suite application software |
The table below shows the typical installation scenarios, along with a list of what programs to install in each case. You can, of course, install all three programs for each of the installation scenarios.
Installation Scenario |
What to install |
Set up a floating license Token Pool on a host computer |
Install Mx-Serve and Mx‑Serve Manager |
Set up a computer to monitor status and token usage for a particular Token Pool |
Just install the Mx‑Serve Manager |
Set up a workstation to use the Mx‑Suite |
For floating licenses just install the Mx-Suite. For fixed licenses install Mx‑Suite and Mx‑Serve |
